One of the most famous fad diets, the Cabbage Soup Diet is a very low calorie low fat diet based on (you've guessed it) cabbage soup, plus a few other foods, including vegetables, fruits and restricted carbs and protein. Typically the advice is to follow it for 7 days, then eat normally for 14 days, then return to the Cabbage Soup Diet for another 7 days and so on.Despite claims to the contrary, cabbage does not possess any 'fat-burning' properties. The reason the Cabbage Soup Diet causes weight loss is because it provides no more than about 800-900 calories a day.
Ingredients:4 slices of bacon, cooked & crumbled, 1 pound lean ground beef, cooked, crumbled, well drained, 1 lg. onion, chopped, 3 lg. potatoes, cubed, 4 c. cabbage, shredded, 3 cups chicken broth or vegetable broth, 1 large can (28 ounces) crushed tomatoes, 1 can kidney beans, salt and pepper, to taste
Preparation: Brown bacon and ground beef; drain and add to slow cooker with all other ingredients. Cook on low 7 to 9 hours. Taste and adjust seasonings.
Pros and Cons of the Cabbage Soup Diet
Pros: You'll lose weight fast, and can get as much of the foods listed in the program as you want. Although the diet is only for seven days (and shouldn't be adhered to for longer), it provides a great "kick-start" for a more moderate diet.
Cons: Some people find the soup bland. Some people have reported feeling light-headed, weak, and have suffered from decreased concentration (although some who have been affected in this way felt it was well worth it, since it was only for a week and they had lost considerable weight).
The cabbage soup diet is sometimes referred to as the "Mayo Clinic Diet", and the "Sacred Heart Hospital Diet". Interestingly, this diet has nothing to do with either the Mayo Clinic, nor any Sacred Heart Hospital we know about.
Day One: Fruit: Eat all of the fruit you want (except bananas). Eat only your soup and the fruit for the first day. For drinks- unsweetened teas, cranberry juice and water.

Eat all the vegetables you want along with your soup. At dinner, reward yourself with a big baked potato with butter. Do not eat fruit today.
Day Three: Mix Days One and Two: Eat all the soup, fruits and vegetables you want. No Baked Potato.
Day Four: Bananas and Skim Milk: Eat as many as eight bananas and drink as many glasses of skim milk as you would like on this day, along with your soup. This day is supposed to lessen your desire for sweets.
Day Five: Beef And Tomatos: Ten to twenty ounces of beef and up to six fresh tomtoes. Drink at least 6 to 8 glasses of water this day to wash the uric acid from your body. Eat your soup at least once this day.
Day Six: Beef and Vegetables: Eat to your heart's content of beef and vegetables this day. You can even have 2 or 3 steaks if you like, with leafy green vegetables. No Baked Potato. Eat your soup at least once.
Day Seven: Brown rice, unsweetened fruit juices and vegetables: Again stuff, stuff, stuff yourself. Be sure to eat your soup at least once this day.
