Boston, MA: Pam O. used Zicam twice before she experienced reported Zicam side effects. She is now worried that she will never fully recover from the Zicam smell loss, and will suffer without a sense of smell or taste for the rest of her life.

Smell Loss”In April [2009], it felt like I was getting a little tickle in my throat, so I thought I was getting a cold,” Pam says. “My understanding was that Zicam was most effective if used at the start of the cold. I had used it in February [2009] without any side effects. This time, I used the nasal pump and squirted each nostril once. It burned a bit at first, but the burn was not devastating. I had felt the burning when I used Zicam before.

Within 2 hours, I had no sense of smell or taste. I sat down for lunch that day and I couldn’t taste it. I made a cup of flavored coffee and it thought it tasted very weak.

That weekend, I was talking to a friend. I said I thought I’d fried my nose on Zicam. A girl [who was nearby] said that happened to her 2 years ago and her sense of smell and taste were gone for 9 months. I became alarmed and went online, where I saw reports of people losing their sense of smell and taste permanently.

I got a prescription for Prednisone, which I took for 10 days to prevent permanent nerve damage to my nose and to reduce inflammation. Then, I saw an ENT [ear, nose and throat] doctor in Boston, who had not heard of this problem. He referred me to a [nose and sinus] specialist. I was the second person to call with the same problem that day.

I had a CT to rule out any other possible trauma. The doctors ruled out everything else and they concurred that it was the Zicam. The doctor’s words were, ‘chemically modulated damage to the olfactory nerves.’ They said it was definitely nerve damage and it will take a long time to heal.

Since that time, I’ve done acupuncture, seen a chiropractor and done craniofacial therapy, trying to help the nerves heal. There is nothing that can be done. I spent a fortune on chiropractors and acupuncturists—I’ll do anything. It’s pretty devastating.

Every morning, I stick my nose in jar of peanut butter. It could be psychological, but occasionally I can smell the peanut butter. However, it is very faint and it comes and goes. One day I could smell it faintly and the next day not at all. I can’t smell a rose or a hamburger. I can’t tell the difference between gasoline or bleach. I can’t smell things burning. If I forget about food on the frying pan, the smoke detector goes off but I can’t smell the food burning. I have a funny taste in my mouth, like rancid coffee or burning tar—that’s the only way I can describe it.

For 3 days in a row, I asked the pharmacist to take Zicam off the shelf. In April, they wouldn’t. If this information this had come out sooner, I probably wouldn’t have been exposed to Zicam.

It’s been 3 months and I’m hoping for a full recovery. I just want to share my story and I want to know if there is any hope of recovery. I want to hear that somebody got better.”

VIAGRA, CIALIS AND LEVITRA

Viagra, produced by Pfizer Inc., has been used by 23 million men around the world. Some of these men have suffered from NAION while taking Viagra.

Other side effects associated with Viagra are intraocular pressure, retinal vascular disease and other eye problems such as increased sensitivity to light and blurry vision.

Viagra is one of three drugs that have been approved by the FDA  for Erectile Dysfunction (ED).  The other two are Cialis, which is produced by Eli Lilly, and Levitra, which is manufactured by Bayer Pharmaceuticals.

Both Cialis and Levitra have also been linked to loss of vision caused by NAION.

Here is a quote from the official product information for Cialis:

In rare instances, men taking prescription ED tablets (including CIALIS) reported a sudden decrease or loss of vision or hearing (sometimes with ringing in the ears and dizziness).

It’s not possible to determine if these events are related directly to the ED tablets or to other factors.

If you have a sudden decrease or loss of vision or hearing, stop taking any ED tablet, including CIALIS and call your doctor right away.

ZENCORE PLUS

Bodee LLC announced recently it is conducting a nationwide voluntary recall of all the company’s supplement product sold under the name Zencore Plus.

According to ad copy at Zencore.com:

Zencore Plus is a natural herbal supplement that enhances male sexual performance.   Zencore Plus contains a combination of powerful natural herbs that enhances long lasting, hard and firm erections and boost sexual stamina and energy. … You take Zencore Plus 45 minutes before sexual activity and you’ll experience powerful and fast acting results and it lasts up to 24 hours!… Take Zencore Plus and enjoy a great time of passion and sexual fulfillment.

Bodee LLC is conducting this recall after being informed by representatives of the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) that lab analysis by FDA of Zencore Plus samples found the product contains benzamidenafil.

Benzamidenafil may have some of  the same pharmacological properties as sildenafil, tadalafil and vardenafil, which are the active ingredients of  Viagra (Sildenafil), Levitra (Vardenafil) and Cialis (Tadalafil).

The use of Zencore Plus by an unsuspecting user of organic nitrates (such as nitroglycerin) may pose a life-threatening risk of sudden and profound drop of blood pressure.  As such,  it may pose a public health risk when used as a dietary supplement.

Neither the likelihood nor the rate of occurrence of  this dangerous side effect is known.

Zencore Plus is sold in health food stores and by mail order on the internet nationwide.  The official Zencore Plus website is still up and displays an apparently active order page where you can get a “Free Supply” by entering your Visa information.

I did not enter my Visa information to see if the order page is still functioning.

Also still found on the internet, as of the date of this article, are numerous pay-per-click ads (at top and left of search results pages) for the product.

The Zencore Plus product is sold as a 2-capsule blister pack packaged in a retail booklet with five booklets in a box or as a 10-capsule blister pack in a retail box.

The capsules were supplied by Hi-Tech Pharmaceuticals, Inc., Norcross, GA.   Hi-Tech offers on its website a number of male sexual performance enhancers under the trade name Stamina-Rx.  It is not known if these products contain benzamidenafil.

CONCLUSION

I do not understand why there is such a current danger of Salmonella contamination to peanuts but this is a situation that everyone needs to be mindful of.

The big danger from the Salmonella bacterium is an affliction known as “salmonellosis” which is infection of the digestive tract.

Symptoms include: “sudden sharp pain in the stomach, or bowells (intestines), fever and a bloody, watery diarrhea that occurs six to 48 hours after eating.” From the Mosby Medical Encylopedia.

The danger is twofold.

FDA Warns Consumers Against Dietary Supplement Containing Undeclared Drug
Product poses safety risk

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration is warning consumers not to take Venom HYPERDRIVE 3.0, a product sold as a dietary supplement and containing sibutramine. Sibutramine, a controlled substance with risks for abuse or addiction, is a potent drug that poses potential safety risks.

“Sibutramine is the active ingredient in an FDA-approved prescription drug used as an appetite suppressant for weight loss,” said Janet Woodcock, M.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Drug Evaluation and Research. “But when present in a dietary supplement, it may harm unsuspecting consumers because sibutramine can substantially increase blood pressure and heart rate (pulse), and may present a significant risk for people with a history of heart disease, heart failure, irregular heart beats or stroke.”

Venom HYPERDRIVE 3.0 is marketed by Applied Lifescience Research Industries Inc. (ALR Industries), Oak View, Calif. On Dec. 24, 2008, ALR Industries initiated a recall of all lots of Venom HYPERDRIVE 3.0 after the FDA laboratory analysis showed samples of the product contained undeclared sibutramine. Although ALR Industries claims on its Web site that only “trace amounts” of sibutramine were found in this product, the FDA laboratory tests showed that Venom HYPERDRIVE 3.0 contains a significant amount of sibutramine per dosage unit.

The product was sold via distributors and in retail stores nationwide as well as in Canada, Poland, Sweden, Hungary, South Africa, the Netherlands, Australia, France and the United Kingdom. The product was packaged in red plastic bottles containing 90 capsules each with the UPC# 094922534743.

Consumers who have this product should stop taking it immediately and contact their health care professional if they have experienced any adverse effects. Consumers can contact the company at legal@alrindustries.com to receive further instructions for returning the product and to ask any questions.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE — March 5, 2009 — Sheridan Fruit Company, Inc. of Portland, Oregon is recalling all bulk blanched roasted & salted, blanched roasted no salt, and blanched raw peanuts sold between 01/01/07 and 02/13/09 because they have the potential to be contaminated with Salmonella. The products were manufactured using peanuts recalled by Peanut Corporation of America because they may be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella is an organism which can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

Bulk blanched roasted & salted, blanched roasted no salt, and blanched raw peanuts were sold in bulk scoop bins in the Sheridan Fruit Company retail location, as well as delivered to restaurants in Oregon and Washington.

The product was sold loose through bulk scoop bins labeled as:

“Roasted Salted Blanched Peanuts” – Bin #940
“Roasted No Salt Blanched Peanuts – Bin #959
“Raw Blanched Peanuts” Bin – Bin #941

No other UPC or specific lot code information.

Products delivered to restaurants were labeled as Bulk Roasted Salted Blanched Peanuts, Bulk Roasted No Salt Blanched Peanuts, or Bulk Raw Blanched Peanuts. There was no other UPC or specific lot code information. All products were sold between 01/01/07 and 02/13/09.

Sheridan Fruit Company is recalling the bulk peanuts due to the nationwide recall of products from the Peanut Corporation of America’s Plainview, Texas plant. All sales of these peanuts have been halted. No known illnesses have been reported to date in connection with the peanuts sold by Sheridan Fruit Company. Sheridan Fruit Company has informed FDA of its actions and if fully cooperating with the Agency.

Consumers who have purchased Bulk Roasted/Salted Blanched Peanuts, Bulk Roasted No Salt Blanched Peanuts, or Bulk Raw Blanched Peanuts are urged to destroy the products or may return the product for a refund to Sheridan Fruit Company, 409 SE MLK Jr. Blvd, Portland, OR 97214. The FDA has issued a warning letter to Bayer for two commercials, “Not Gonna Take It” and “Balloons,” for its birth control pill, Yaz. According to the FDA, the commercials overstate the efficacy of the pill, minimize its risks and broadens the pills indication by falsely suggesting that Yaz has been approved for treating pre-menstrual syndrome.

The Yaz label warns patients that the contraceptive has not been evaluated to treat premenstrual syndrome, but the FDA notes that this is not mentioned in the “Not Gonna Take It” commercial.

Yaz is in fact approved for treating “moderate acne vulgarities,” as well as premenstrual dysphoric disorder (PMDD)–a more severe condition that causes disruptive emotional and physical symptoms, including depression, anxiety, persistent anger, headaches and joint pain.

But, according to the warning letter, not only does the commercial suggest that Yaz’s is able to treat acne of all severities, in touting the benefits of Yaz in treating such common symptoms as “irritability” and “moodiness,” the commercial fails to distinguish between PMS and the more serious PMDD, leading viewers to believe that Yaz is effective at treating PMS.

The FDA also warns Bayer about a second commercial, “Balloons (video [1]),” in which the song “Goodbye to You” plays in the background as women release balloons displaying their symptoms into the air. The agency says the ad misleads viewers to believe that Yaz can completely cure patients of their symptoms.
